Local tip
There is so much to see in the museum but one of the really fascinating experiences is the world's only multimedia video incorporating characters from the museums paintings. Tickets sold separately at reception desk, see how many you can recognize.

Erarta is the biggest non-governmental collection of contemporary art in Russia. Its task is to collect, exhibit and popularize some of the most ingenious and skillful works by contemporary artists from St Petersburg and other regional cities across the country.

The museum presents innovative exhibitions, publishes a regular catalogue, organizes excursions and educational programs and attracts a wide and varied audience of locals and visitors. The collection of the museum includes about 2000 works by modern artists. The collection also includes graphics, sculpture, installations, and other types of modern fine arts.

One half of the building consists of a museum, the other half is the gallery with regular exhibitions of works for sale. There are plenty of fascinating works of art which present local themes - Catherine II and her lovers for example, or Kopeykin's Bronze Elephant, a picture of a rearing pachyderm replacing the horse in Falconet's iconic Bronze Horseman statue. The kids will love the playful installations called U-Space (advance booking advised). And look out for a packed calendar of events which includes film screenings, music shows, English-language evenings and other artistic gatherings.

Closed Tuesdays.
