The Russian Museum today is a unique depository of artistic treasures, authoritative institute of academic research, major educational center, leading restoration center, and the core institution in a network of national museums of art.

The collection contains over 400,000 exhibits across five major buildings in the center of the city. The main complex is located on Arts' Square (Mikhailovsky Palace) and along the Griboedov Canal (the Benois Wing) and houses the museum's permanent exhibition which traces the history of Russian art from the Xth to the XXth centuries. The museum collection includes all forms, genres, schools and movements of art.

The museum complex has grown to include the Stroganov Palace, St Michael's (Engineers) Castle and the Marble Palace, and also includes the Mikhailovsky Gardens, Engineering Gardens, Summer Garden (including the Summer Palace) and the House of Peter the Great. Look out for special exhibitions and events held across the network. Gifts and beautiful catalogues can be purchased at the museum store, online or in person.

Open daily except Tuesdays. Opening times from 1000 to 1700 (1600 on Mondays and before holidays).
